Michael David Coulter paid $15 for one pair on May 9 this year, but a shop assistant later noticed another pair missing.
Coulter was easily recognisable to the assistant, as he regularly attends the High Street business, and the matter was reported to police.
He returned to pay for the missing item a week later.

"It sounds pretty disgusting, but it was for my wife," Coulter told magistrate Ian Watkins in Wodonga.
"I didn't have enough money sir."
Mr Watkins said it was to his credit that he had returned and paid for the item, which didn't usually happen.
He was fined $300 with $84 in costs.
He was told he could convert the fines to community work.
