It comes after firefighters last week battled more than 60 blazes across the state and Melbourne registered the hottest November day in a hundred years.

The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast cooler weather this week for the state, with the Country Fire Authority predicting lower fire risks until Saturday as a result.

Forest Fire Management Victoria said communities may notice an increase in fire size and smoke as the burning-out works are undertaken.

"It's critically important that we undertake these works now ahead of potentially worsening fire weather," Forest Fire Management Victoria Hume Deputy Chief Fire Officer Aaron Kennedy said.

"The works involve burning out vegetation between the containment line and the fire to reduce the risk of the fire taking a run and potentially impacting communities."

There were 17 fires still burning on Tuesday across Victoria's Alpine region, with no communities under threat.

Many mountain walking tracks were closed to ensure safety of people in the area, and hikers in Victoria's Mount Bogong High Plains were forced to leave the area.

All of them were ignited last Thursday as a result of dry lightning, the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning reported.

Two new fires also ignited by lightning were reported on Tuesday.

"Extreme dryness, erratic winds and difficult terrain have made it challenging for crews to contain these fires," Mr Kennedy said.

"We are fully expecting to be working on these fires for a number of weeks, potentially right up until Christmas and beyond, if we don't receive significant rainfall."
