Police Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton has stated that Victoria is facing a "tidal wave" of violent child pornography material and Ms Maxwell, the Wangaratta-based MP from Derryn Hinch's Justice Party, is worried that sentences for offenders do not match up with the gravity of offending or community expectations.
About two-thirds of these criminals never serve a prison sentence.
When crime statistics are released to public, child pornography is placed into the broader "offensive behaviour" category, meaning it is unclear exactly how many people have been charged.
Ms Maxwell said there should be greater transparency of data.
She put a question to Child Protection Minister Luke Donnellan in Parliament yesterday, asking he direct the data be made publicly available and if any changes are being implemented to target child pornography offenders and ensure adequate sentences.
"It is essential that we continue to fight for the rights of children, and ensure that those who are convicted of either producing or viewing child exploitation material are held accountable," Ms Maxwell said outside of Parliament.
"Sentencing of these offenders must reflect the seriousness of the crime.
"Victims will face many incredibly serious challenges in overcoming such exploitation.
"We will never eradicate violence from society as long as this abuse of children continues."
