The La Trobe University Albury-Wodonga event ties into the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence and follows a similar forum held last year.

Lecturer Heather Downey said the first forum was attended by her social work students, who used their observations in their studies.

"The first forum was about local and national family violence initiatives," she said.

"We had a great turn-out and collected some feedback about what future events might look like.

"That's where the cross-border issues came up; it was the most strongly-identified theme.

"It's particularly an issue in high-risk family violence cases.

"The perpetrator may have moved to NSW and there's a time delay in finding out information that could help mitigate the risk."

Mr Wilson and Parliamentary Secretary for Regional Victoria Danielle Green, who held the position of Australia's first Shadow Minister for the Prevention of Family Violence, will be keynote speakers.

Afterwards, a panel discussion will involve Albury and Wodonga councillors Amanda Cohn and Kat Bennett.

They will be joined by Danielle Thompson and Janine Bussell, who are involved in assessing high-risk family violence cases in meetings that occur in NSW and Victoria.

Dr Downey said ethics approval had been obtained from La Trobe so that proceedings from the forum could form part of a report.

"It doesn't matter where you work in the human services sector, you're always going to meet people who are experiencing family violence," she said.

"Students and practitioners will discuss what could help to fix these issues, keep people safe and the perpetrators accountable.

"We can write a report and publish that in an academic journal.

"These issues aren't confined to Victoria and NSW and hopefully we can contribute to change."

The forum from 1pm on Wednesday is featured in a program of events compiled by Wodonga Council for the 16 days of activism.

Also on Wednesday, a Community Walk Against Violence will take place from 11am from St Stephen's Church to Junction Square, involving Junction Support Services, DHHS, the Salvation Army, and Wodonga Police, with a barbecue to follow.
