The 24-year-old is in talks about a co-drive in the 2020 Pirtek Enduro Cup - which would include the Bathurst 1000.

Boys' stock is rising fast after he won two of the last three races in the Super2 Series, but the financial strain of racing at that level almost forced the Albury driver off the grid.

"The last two years have been really, really tough," he said.

"At the start of this year, I had little to no sponsorship. I've always had great local companies like the Joss Group, Arnold's Fruit Market and Dawson's Haulage that have helped me all the way through, but it's a lot of money to go racing.

"Coming into round one, we just got there and then round two, I was like 'I think we're done.'

"We just managed to get there again and honestly, we did that at basically every round this year.

"Looking back now, it's so important that you do all those things, but at the time it was like 'when do we pull the plug on this thing?'

"You're scrounging to get to every one of them (races) and then you're not getting the results you want so there's no reward at the end of all the hard work.

"Only two months ago, I was thinking this isn't far from being over."

Boys was only able to race at Bathurst this year after fellow Albury stars Brad Jones and David Reynolds joined forces at a special fundraiser in August.

That proved a turning point as Boys drove from last to fifth at Mount Panorama before collecting his first race wins at Sandown and Newcastle.

"I didn't know if there was a future in it for me. I didn't know if I was even good enough to be an elite Supercars driver, so the last few weeks has been such a weight lifted," he said.

"Now I feel like there is certainly a future in it for me.

"I've been introducing myself to teams in regards to a co-drive for next year but talks haven't gone past the introduction phase.

"Hopefully over the next three months I'll be able to get some sort of deal done there because I think it's a big gain to be able to do those laps.

"I think you need to do that to get your foot in the door at possibly getting a main series drive.

"Even at Bathurst this year, I really felt the guys (in Super2) who were doing the co-driving had such a massive advantage over us because it's such a confidence track up at Bathurst.

"They'd had 40 minutes of track time before we got on the track and as soon as you got into practice one, you could see it straight away.

"It was unbelievable how hard they were able to push and for me to be a real chance of winning that race, I need to be in a co-drive."

There's now a real chance Boys could be a main series driver in the Supercars Championship by 2021.

"It's always been a dream of mine to be a professional race car driver and Supercars is the only place you can do that in Australia," he said.

"For me, (co-driving) would be an important step in getting towards that.

"If I could make that step next year and do a good job, I wouldn't be far away from that dream becoming a reality."
