Wodonga's Blazing Stump Hotel is calling for donations of non-perishable food items, bottled water, domestic pet food, children's toys or vouchers to help spread some festive cheer to drought-stricken farming families in the region.
Functions manager Jo Morley said she was moved to do something after she and her husband were asked to support a fundraiser for a farming family at Holbrook doing it tough.
"After we donated I thought, we could do this ten-fold through the pub," she said.
"I really appreciate that so many people are already supporting different fundraising initiatives to assist farmers.
"However we feel this is a little different in that Christmas is a very special time for most families and so many of our farming families are struggling to afford even the basics."
The Department of Primary Industries latest drought map shows all of NSW in drought with 44 per cent of the state in intense drought, including parts of the northern Riverina, with the remainder of the Murray and Riverina areas in drought or drought affected.
Ms Morley said she was seeking input from organisations including Rural Aid to pinpoint families that might be in need.
"We know there are families locally struggling from the Kiewa Valley through to Uranquinty and Hay; they are all local to us," she said.
"This pub has a long connection to farmers and also through the fire brigades so we just want to assist in whatever way we can."
Ms Morley is currently looking for assistance locally to help distribute the donated goods and said businesses would be thanked on the hotel's Facebook page, which reaches thousands of people each week.
The DPI describes the current drought, which began in mid-2017, as "a major drought event" on its long-term historical records.
