In its eighth start for the Wangaratta stable, Coontara, piloted by Simon Miller, stormed to victory, winning by more than a length from Sacred Valley (Hayes and Dabernig), while Ivy's Belle, trained by Albury's John Taylor, was third.
"She obviously showed that stepping up to the 1400 (metres) was what she was looking for. She led and it was a good, tough win," McCarthy said.
"She's run a couple of thirds and the form of the ones that were beating her at the time were very, very good and were going on and winning in town.
"She's always showed she's had a bit of ability, the first two runs this preparation things hadn't gone her way and stepping up to the 1400 was great.
ALSO IN SPORT:
"She left the gates nice and clean and popped herself outside the the leader. She was pulling a little bit hard so Simon (Miller) decided he'd take her to the front and it was a good move.
"She relaxed well in front and didn't give anything else a chance really."
McCarthy has nominated Coontara for a class one 1500m race at Albury this coming Saturday and will have a number of runners at upcoming meetings in Wangaratta and Corowa.
He will head back to the city with stable star Ashlor racing at Moonee Valley on December 28.
Albury trainer Mitch Beer won the first of the six-race program with Zaberfeldie edging out Happy Lad and Lennox Road.
Donna Scott and Kym Davison picked up seconds with Hazel's Diary and Houlio's Dream.
