No fires have been reported burning nearby, instead the smoke has blown in from other fires across the state.

RFS Southern Border said smoke haze was visible in Albury, Federation, Berrigan and Greater Hume regions.

A total fire ban has been declared for the eastern Riverina region, including Albury, Greater Hume and Wagga on Tuesday, due to forecast hot and windy conditions.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Tom Delamotte said overnight winds drew the smoke down to the Border region.

"The NSW fires are producing most of the smoke at the moment," Mr Delamotte said.

"There were very extensive areas of smoke with the north easterly dragging that down to the north east parts of Victoria and some parts of Gippsland."

Mr Delamotte said the smoke was expected to clear when the winds turn.

"A flush of milder air coming out from the south west should clear the smoke haze away to the south east," he said.

The NSW government data air quality rating system, showed the South-west slopes air quality deteriorated from 'good' to 'fair' throughout the day, but NSW Health advises people to stay indoors and avoid vigorous exercise to minimise adverse effects of bushfire smoke.

Mr Delamotte said smoke had pooled in the valleys of the north eastern Victorian high country, in recent days.

"The areas that could be most effected are those areas around Mount Beauty and the Kiewa Valley," Mr Delamotte said.

"It should clear up as we move through the day with those south westerlies blowing through."
