Mark Dixon assured those at a Wodonga Ratepayers' Association meeting on Tuesday night the bill for the case tied to the developer of Kinchington Estate would be revealed.

A Supreme Court judge found last month the council acted unfairly by not allowing the developer to know why it had not amended two clauses in an agreement.

As a result, Wodonga Council will have to pay the legal costs of JMP Developments as well as its own bill.

Mr Dixon told the meeting he did not know the exact amount, but committed to disclosing it.

"As soon as we know those precise costs I will let you know," he said.

"I think the indication is that those costs will be in the range of $15 to $20,000 - they're the costs that we would pay JMP in this case, so obviously we would have some costs in terms of council's costs in defending our case."

Mr Dixon said the council heeded legal advice in pursuing the matter.

However, he has spoken to developers since the judgement with the aim of circumnavigating court action.

"I've met with JMP, I've also met with a few of our other developers around slightly changing the process that council could adopt, where council works with developers to try and find a consensus that avoids anything going, or proceeding, to legal action," Mr Dixon said.

He said that could involve the council having an "integrated project team" which would see a "whole range of people in the room and we try and work to a solution" rather than having one-on-ones with developers.

Mr Dixon suggested there were no winners overall with court action.
