The two-hour production co-ordinated by Wodonga Brass Band was being held for the 44^th year with performers ranging from seasoned veterans to first timers.

Among them were Robyn Broadbent, who was meant to make her carols debut in the year they were cancelled due to bushfires in the area.

But she was appearing at her fourth event and was thrilled when she was told she would be singing Away in a Manger.

She was joined on stage by St Augustine's Primary School students who created the Nativity scene.

"I just love it," Ms Broadbent said.

"The community atmosphere is fantastic and this year we've got beautiful weather.

"We got our song a couple of months ago and then we have about four weeks practice with the band."

Kimberley Forbes kicked off the night by singing O Come All Ye Faithful with Madeleine Kay among the first time performers at the carols and she performed O Little Town of Bethlehem.

Midway through the show Santa Claus cut into his hectic schedule and performed old favourite Jingle Bells solo before belting out Rudolph The Red Nose Reindeer with the help of Caitlin Clarke.

Many carols attendees had arrived well before the scheduled start time of 7.30pm to secure their spots in front of the main stage.

"It was another brilliant Wodonga Carols by Candlelight and with the new carols choir, more performers and more food options this year has to be one of the yet," event co-ordinator Jacob Mildren said.

"The weather was perfect and drew one of the biggest crowds we've ever seen.

"It's always great to bring the community together each year for the special night.

"On first count, the candle sales raised more than $3000 for the palliative care unit."

Albury Wodonga Health's palliative care unit is benefiting from the sale of candles for the second year in a row.

Wodonga deputy mayor Brian Mitchell officially welcomed the crowd to the event which was hosted by Kevin Poulton.
