Mr Bird, who has been in the role since August 2017 after originally joining Alpine's management team two years earlier, is planning to return to the private sector.

"I am disappointed Charlie has resigned," Alpine mayor Peter Roper said.

"Charlie is results-driven and has shown strong leadership during his time here."

His final day with Alpine will be March 10.

Mr Bird said he was looking forward to re-establishing his consulting business and spending more time with his family.

"The opportunity to work with the community in a stunning location has been hugely rewarding," he said.

"I've enjoyed working with a fantastic team of people to deliver incredible outcomes for our community."
