Wodonga highway patrol said the man failed to negotiate a bend in his blue Ford sedan, hit gravel and lost control about 7.15am while travelling north on Plunketts Road, next to Hume Freeway.
Police, Country Fire Authority and ambulance attended the incident, with the man taken to Albury hospital for observation.
The car was significantly damaged and had to be towed from the scene.
Acting Sergeant Owen Clarke said the driver was lucky not to be injured more seriously.
"It's an important thing to remember that accidents can happen literally to anyone at any time," he said.
"You just need to make sure that everybody is being as careful as they can be on the roads as they get busier and busier in the lead-up to Christmas."
