Wodonga Criminal Investigation Unit are hoping the driver of a white car seen in the Gateway Island area on Sunday night "has some answers" for them.
The fire which broke out around 8pm is being treated as suspicious by police who say if it wasn't for the quick action by CFA crews the fire "could have been a lot worse".
Detective Ian Deverell said the fire was worrying for police, especially at this time of year.
"It is very concerning for police and the CFA when we have these sort of fires occurring in our region," he said.
IN OTHER NEWS:
"We know that any fire can get out of control and cause a lot of damage and even worse cause death.
"So we treat every fire that is suspicious as a serious matter and we do our best to ascertain who is involved."
Detective Deverell said police believe the vehicle may be connected to the fire.
"We have obtained some CCTV footage from a nearby property and we are appealing to the community to have a look at this footage and see if they recognise the vehicle.
"We believe it is a white Toyota we believe and it has two black rims on one side and silver rims on the other side of the vehicle.
"The vehicle was in the area at the time and are interested to ascertain who was driving the vehicle at the time, we are interested in chatting to them."
With temperatures already in the high 30s and expected to reach 41 by the end of the week Detective Deverell said emergency services are already on high alert.
"It is credit to the great work of the CFA that the fire was able to be put out quite quickly saving any structural damage to any buildings in the area," he said.
"We believe the fire could have been a lot worse if it wasn't for the work of the CFA. The fire is being treated as suspicious on the basis that there was no lightning strikes in the area at the time, the remoteness of where it has been lit and fires don't start themselves."
The CFA have also put out a warning to all farmers to exercise extreme caution when cutting, baling and storing hay during the hot, dry conditions.
The Bureau of Meteorology is tipping the mercury to climb to 41 on Thursday and Friday in Albury-Wodonga.
The RFS has also declared a total fire ban for NSW.
Anyone who recognises the vehicle or has any information about the fire that would assist police should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Wodonga police on 6049 2600.
