Poor air quality related to smoke has seen Harness Racing NSW stewards abandon meetings at Tamworth, Menangle and Goulburn since December 19.

Albury Harness Racing Club president Sue van de Ven is hopeful the smoke which has hovered over the Border in recent days will be cleared by Tuesday evening.

However, if there is atmospheric pollution a decision to halt racing would not be made until an hour before the first, Mrs van de Ven said.

"When it comes to the air quality the wind and breeze can change within half an hour," she said.

Mrs van de Ven reiterated that fireworks displays at the meeting would proceed and said profits from a raffle would benefit firefighters and drought-hit farmers.

"People don't realise the contribution harness racing gives to Albury," she said.

"The Lavington Lions Club, for example who have their food stand all through the year, that money goes back into the eisteddfod and other parts of Albury."

Wodonga Raiders Football and Netball Club president Mark Johnston said smoke should not affect his organisation's New Year's Eve fireworks at Birallee Park.

"The weather is up and down but it looks like being a cooler day on New Year's Eve with showers in the morning and only in the 30s, not the 40s we have had," Mr Johnston said.

"Hopefully that makes it more palatable for people."

Based on that forecast, Mr Johnston is hoping for an attendance of 8000 to 10,000 at the ground.

Former Albury citizen of the year and lairy suit fan Steve Bowen will return to DJing the event, replacing the late Sedgie, AKA Shane Sedgwick, after having filled that role in earlier years.

Pet owners are urged to make sure they're with their animals at the time of the fireworks or have somebody tending to them, to ensure they are not distressed by the noise.
