Mr Morrison and his wife Jenny flew into Albury on Tuesday and travelled to Holbrook where they met Mr McPaul's wife Megan and his mother.
They had earlier attended the funeral of another firefighter killed on duty this summer, Andrew O'Dwyer, held in Sydney.
No media were invited at the request of family and firefighters.
Mr and Mrs Morrison made a similar private visit to Mr O'Dwyer's Horsley Park brigade following his death.
"Following the funeral this morning in Sydney of Andrew O'Dwyer, the Prime Minister and Mrs Morrison flew to Albury to directly convey their personal condolences and sympathies to Sam McPaul's wife and mother, and to meet the captain who was with Sam on the day," a spokesman for Mr Morrison told The Border Mail.
"(Mr Morrison also met) other volunteer firefighters, with their families, who had suffered burns fighting the fires nearby and have now been able to return home to recover."
Mr Morrison also visited the emergency management centre near the Albury Airport upon their return from Holbrook.
NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian, Emergency Services Minister David Elliott, and NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller also attended Mr O'Dwyer's funeral on Tuesday.
Mr O'Dwyer was killed fighting the Green Wattle Creek fire near Buxton when the truck he was travelling in rolled off the road on December 19.
Colleague Geoffrey Keaton was killed in the accident.
Mr Morrison has previously indicated he intends being at Mr McPaul's funeral.
