The driver spun out of control after an oncoming vehicle turned in front of his car about 9am yesterday.
The impact speared his Toyota Camry off the road and through a give way sign, before coming to a rest on the roadside.
The man had to be cut out of the car by SES volunteers due to his feet being trapped.
He was then flown to a hospital by air ambulance.
The incident occurred at the intersection of the Murray Valley Highway and Condaw Drive, near Bunnings.
IN OTHER NEWS:
Acting Sergeant David Cowley said the offending driver had been taking his new car back to Queensland, and turned right towards Bunnings in front of the injured man's car.
"He'll be issued an infringement for failing to give way," Acting Sergeant Cowley said.
"He has no serious injuries.
"The (injured man) driving the Corolla has got a serious head injury.
"He's been airlifted as a precautionary measure."
A witness at the scene gave details to police.
The offending driver's car will likely be written off.
"We'd like everyone to drive to the conditions as this time of the year is very busy with tourists," Acting Sergeant Cowley said.
"There are people around who are unfamiliar with the area and they need to be driving cautiously."
He said a pedestrian island in the middle of the road, which can obscure drivers' views, was part of the cause.
