Thunderstorms with possible showers are forecast for the Albury-Wodonga region on Wednesday and Thursday, while the bureau has predicted Friday, Saturday and Sunday will be cloudy with showers and possibly more storms.

Up to 3mm of rain is predicted to fall in Albury-Wodonga on Wednesday, 4mm on Thursday, 2mm on Friday, 6mm on Saturday and up to 10mm on Sunday, according to the bureau.

Senior forecaster Michael Efron said if the storms developed they would be slow moving and could result in significant localised rainfall and unsettled conditions.

"The rain [isn't] necessarily good news with conditions becoming quite hazardous across firegrounds," he said.

Mr Efron said the rain could sweep across bare earth left behind after fires and sweep debris onto roads, possibly even triggering flash flooding.

In the fire-affected region near Corryong, 2mm of rain is forecast for Wednesday, between 3mm and 8mm on Thursday and up to 4mm of rain could fall on both Friday and Saturday.

Between 4mm and 15mm is expected on Sunday.

In Tumbarumba possible storms are forecast Wednesday through to Sunday with daily rainfall totals of between 1mm and 15mm expected.

Country Fire Authority's Paul King told a community meeting at Latchford Barracks the rain was welcome but not a silver bullet.

"We have high hopes for the upcoming weather in terms of fire danger - none of it will be a knock-out blow but we are expecting some rain," he said. "It is not all rosy when it comes to rain, we don't want it all at once."

Albury airport has recorded 2.4mm of rain so far in 2020, with 0.2mm on January 6, and 2.2mm on January 7.

In 2019, Wodonga recorded just 358.3mm of rainfall, making it the city's driest year in more than five decades.

In 1967 only 296.9mm fell in Wodonga.
