Wangaratta police have called for the public's assistance, after thieves targeted the Wangaratta Showgrounds emergency relief centre.

The centre was set up to host evacuees fleeing bushfires in North East Victoria.

On Tuesday, Wangaratta police posted a public appeal for information on their Eyewatch Facebook page which said thieves had targeted the centre overnight on January 8 with two backpacks containing personal and army-issue items were stolen.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Wangaratta Police on 03 5723 0888 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
It comes as the Country Women's Association of NSW warned people not to give money to people going door-to-door claiming to be collecting money on their behalf.
"We've had reports of people knocking on doors saying they are fundraising for CWA," the group posted on Facebook.
"This is not a genuine fundraiser. Please do not give funds to people coming door-to-door asking for money."
