Troy John Stacey was supported by the victim when he fronted Albury Local Court for sentencing.
The charges had been adjourned from mid-November to allow the preparation of a sentence assessment report.
His lawyer described the charges as "quite concerning" based on what was outlined in the police facts.
Magistrate Richard Funston was told that at one point Stacey, 42, was using up to 1.5 grams of methamphetamine a day.
Mr Funston said this emphasised the importance of Stacey working "every day" on tackling his addiction.
Drugs and his anger issues were at the heart of his offending.
Stacey told Mr Funston that he had already been to four drug rehabilitation sessions.
The court heard previously that Stacey assaulted the woman in her Thurgoona Street unit - the defendant was homeless, so had been staying with her - on September 23.
It all began after he began putting her down on her waking up about 7.30am.
"You don't deserve to be loved. You're an awful person," Stacey told her.
While he walked out of court by himself after pleading guilty at his previous appearance, for his sentencing the pair arrived and left together and sat closely to each other in the public gallery.
Stacey and the victim had been in a relationship for about three months at the time of the offending.
His remarks, the court heard, caused her to feel sad so she tried to ignore Stacey, who responded by offering a hug and telling her "you know I would never hurt you".
But she rejected his apology and went to get shoes from a cupboard to go outside.
Stacey grabbed her in a bear-hug as she crouched over the cupboard and dragged her away.
When she called for help, Stacey put his hand over her mouth.
Stacey was placed on an 18-month community corrections order. He must also complete 150 hours of unpaid work.
