Victorian Emergency Commissioner Andrew Crisp was briefed at the Wodonga Incident Control Centre on Thursday and said the affect of forecast rain in coming days would remain to be seen.
"In these milder conditions, we've got firefighters out there doing back-burning," he said.
"We've been briefed by the incident controller about some work that's happening on the western side of the Corryong fire, and he was saying if there had been some rain overnight, they wouldn't have been to do that work.
"In some respects it has worked in our favour that we haven't had rain."
All North East fires but the Abbeyard fire, which was yesterday at a Watch and Act level, have been downgraded to advice.
Commissioner Crisp said Victorian agencies were working closely with NSW counterparts.
"We put a firefighting liason person into Cooma, and more recently in Bombala, because of work happening closer to the border," he said.
"We're working hand-in-glove with our partners north of the border and I speak regularly with RFS Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons."
Australian Defence Force Brigadier Matt Burr, of Joint Task Force 646, said activities for his members were similar either side of the Murray River, but nuanced according to need.
"We've been very active in making sure if we can support from Victoria into NSW, and vice-versa, that's where we'll be," he said.
"The border doesn't exist for us.
IN OTHER NEWS:
"[In Corryong] it's definitely standing shoulder to shoulder, whether it be with Agriculture Victoria distributing fodder .... or at relief centres helping out Department of Health and Human Services."
Brigadier Burr said the ADF would be "there for as long as the community needs".
"While we've been here for a short period of time, firefighters have been working on this for months and weeks - we want to recognise their courage and commitment," he said.
"We're really humbled to be part of that team ... and whatever we can do to support them, we'll do it."
