A former CFA member was seen wearing his old uniform into firegrounds after travelling through roadblocks in the Buffalo River area on Monday.
The Myrtleford man, aged about 50, took photographs but didn't fight the fires.
Detective Sergeant Chris Hill said it was unclear if the man would be charged.
IN OTHER NEWS:
"Police are investigating whether that male has been impersonating CFA personnel," he said.
"No decision has been made on laying any charges."
Detective Sergeant Hill said people who disobeyed roadblocks placed themselves and emergency workers at risk.
"Roadblocks are there for a reason," he said.
"Most paramount is community safety and the safety of emergency personnel.
