Albury Highway Patrol were conducting speed checks on the Hume Highway when a white Mazda was detected at 165 km/h about 2.20pm.
The car was stopped just south of Holbrook, where the speed limit is 110 km/h.
When asked about his speed the NSW driver said, "I'm trying to get back to Sydney".
Highway patrol officers issued an infringement for excess speeding over 45 km/h - a fine of $2482 - and suspended the driver's licence on the spot for six months. suspended and confiscated on the spot for 6 months.
Operation Safe Return ran from Friday to midnight on Monday, and resulted in 3164 speed infringements being issued across the state.
On the Victorian side of the border, Operation Amity was also in force until the January 27.
Victoria Police officers working out of Eastern Region Division 4, which expands past Glenrowan and into the high country, conducted more than 700 breath tests.
Ten drink and drug drivers were detected and so were 157 other offences.
