A Federation Council chief revealed on Tuesday the NSW Roads and Maritime Services had plans for significant works on the crossing between shopping hubs.
Director engineering services Steve Carmichael told of the work at councillors' first meeting for the year.
"RMS are planning to do major repairs to that bridge, which are going to span over about seven or eight months, starting this year," he said.
"They're talking about doing it at night, it will probably mean that that bridge will be closed of a night time at certain times.
"Some of the main trusses have got to be replaced underneath the bridge apparently.
"They are negotiating with us at the moment to set up a depot site in Mulwala, that's the reason we're aware of it at this stage."
Mr Carmichael did not say when the works were expected to begin.
His news coincided with a notice of motion from Mulwala councillor Bronwyn Thomas calling for the council to "urgently communicate" with the Murray-Darling Basin Authority about the closure of weir bridge.
That crossing, west of the main bridge, has been slated for closure in 2020 since 2003, but the authority has not stated when it will shutdown.
Cr Thomas said the coming work showed the need for the MDBA to specify closure data for the weir bridge.
"Here we are in 2020 and there's really has been no public consultation, let alone with LGAs," Cr Thomas said.
"We really just need to move on with it and....get them on the ground and say 'hey what's happening?', especially in light of what our director Carmichael has just brought to the table in terms of these proposed works.
"There's been certainly no disclosure to the general public, in terms of these proposed works for 2020 on the main bridge."
