The former mayor, who's penned many grants applications for Jindera football, swimming and recreation reserve needs, was shocked projects found deserving were snubbed.
She said merit should be the overriding reason for funding, rather than the political representation in the seat.
"To see that you commit at least 100 hours as a volunteer to an application and it's just coloured into what the political party of your region is - it's absolutely distasteful," Cr Knight said.
Asked if Wodonga-based Senator McKenzie should resign, Cr Knight replied "absolutely".
"One she did not appropriately judge the applications and two she actually gave funding to an organisation she only joined four days beforehand," Cr Knight said referring to the Wangaratta Clay Target Club.
Her third reason was based on Liberal Party candidate Georgina Downer being allowed to announce a grant when she was not a parliamentarian, labelling it "just corrupt, it's a rort".
That incident prompted the Labor Party to ask the auditor-general to investigate the sport grants program.
