The letters arrived at Albury's NSW Rural Fire Service earlier this week full of gratitude for those who have been battling fires across the country from College Jacques Brel, the middle years college in Villers-Bretonneux.
IN OTHER NEWS:
Operational officer John Osmond said the gesture was "really unexpected" but a "welcome surprise".
"That is a long way to send thank you letters - it really shows there is still such a strong connection with the town and Australia," he said.
"Our members have been really taken back by the letters and I think the community are really thankful as well.
"Something so little can make the world of difference. Thank you to all the students at College Jacques Brel for your kind words of love and support."
Personalised letters were sent to 30 brigades across NSW and Victoria.
