St Patrick's Neil Smith spilled a chance at cover against Albury in round 13 and ended up with two fractures to his left index finger.
While it's been a season to forget for St Patrick's, who have just three wins, Smith had been firing with 448 runs at 44.8 and was only overtaken on Sunday at the top of the runs list, despite missing the past three innings.

"It kind of got big on me. It was one of those ones where you don't know whether to go fingers up or down," Smith said.
"My fingernail actually went through the skin, so I had to have surgery on it that night. I've got a splint on it for another month or so.

"If we were going to play finals I could have looked at fast tracking it, but there's no point really.
"We're sitting ninth and it doesn't look great, but there's been five or six games that have been really close and we've been on the wrong side of all of them."
Smith has had little sympathy from his teammates.
"My nickname in the group chat is 'Dolly' at the moment," he laughed.
