Daniel Hounslow, 42, killed Micah Kalawek in the backyard of a home in the outer suburb of Wyndham Vale on March 24 last year.
Hounslow lived in Wodonga and worked as a truck detailer before moving to the property where the murder occurred on Mount Eagle Way.

When asked in the Melbourne Supreme Court on Friday how he wanted to plead, the 42-year-old replied "guilty miss".
Multiple victim impact statements will be tendered, and at least one will be read aloud.
The court heard about three months would be needed to obtain psychological reports.
A committal hearing in the Magistrates Court last September heard Hounslow "lost his marbles" before the killing.
The court heard he had told a housemate he had bashed Mr Kalawek in the backyard of the home for three hours.
The case will return to the Supreme Court on June 9.
Justice Elizabeth Hollingworth told Hounslow he would remain in custody, to which he replied "yes miss".
