Adam Jay Azzi killed Lloyd Kennedy outside the Webb Street house on November 6, 2016, after lunging at Kennedy's friend, Nathan Vercoe, with a knife.

Mr Kennedy died of a single knife wound to his heart, with Azzi found guilty of manslaughter at trial last year.

The late man's partner, Sianne Mather, sobbed heavily in the Supreme Court on Tuesday as she spoke of his death.

"My children still have nightmares of the monster who took their dad away," she said.

"I've not only lost my partner and my fiance but I've lost my best friend.

"I never got to share my son's first words and his first steps."

Ms Mather said the late man's youngest boy still didn't understand why his dad would never come home.

"We will never get our Lloyd back and it's an anger that will never go away," she said.

Mr Kennedy's brother, Brendon, breathed heavily as he directed his victim impact statement directly at Azzi, who was unmoved and did not react.

A large number of people in the court cried as family members spoke of their grief, including a young boy.

The late man's brother said he struggled to look at his nephew without crying.

"I don't hate the accused," Mr Kennedy said.

"I'm disappointed he took my brother away from me.

"Why did this happen to Lloyd?

"I will never understand that."

The late man's stepdaughter said the incident was a "nightmare" that had "ripped our whole family apart".

"(He was) tragically taken out of our lives ... our whole world was destroyed."

Prosecutor Paul Kerr said Azzi had a long history of violence, including for stabbing.

He said the knife was on a downwards trajectory when it entered the late man's body and travelled through his left ventricle, into his liver, with more than a minor degree of force.

Mr Kerr said Azzi had come out of the Webb Street home at the late man and Mr Vercoe with the knife, and argued there was no threat to him.

Defence barrister Eric Wilson said there was no evidence there was a deliberate action by Azzi with the knife.

Mr Wilson said he had descended from a football player who was injured into oxycodone use, then heroin, ice, had failed rehab, become unemployable and served longer terms in jail.

His last prison term was for four years.

Azzi, who fronted court in prison greens with a shaved head and rats tail, will be sentenced at a later date.

Mr Kennedy yelled at Azzi and called him a "rat" as he was led out.
