I feel compelled to write to you regarding the disgusting shooting of cockatoos and or other native wildlife at the Albury Commercial Club Golf Club. These poor defenseless animals were treated so horribly and to what gain? You might say they are just cockatoos but they are an integral part of our environment. While they may do some damage to the golf course there are many and varied ways of relocating them without killing them. As a member of the Commercial Club for many years I am extremely disappointed with the club's actions. Given the sensitivity of the environment in this day and age it seems unbelievable the club would take this course of action. We really are moving into a cashless society thanks (not) to government connivance. My stepson flew into Melbourne on the redeye from Perth and went to Southern Cross to book onto the XPT. He wanted to pay cash because he knew there was insufficient funds on his debit card. No can do; NSW Trainlink won't accept cash if you want the sale price for the ticket. In fact, NSW Trainlink won't accept cash at the station. The only alternative he was offered was to be provided a ticket for the train and told to pay cash on the train - at a 20 per cent surcharge. Not good enough. Tim Fischer Square would make for a great name to replace QEII Square. That would pave the way for the north-east corner of the square when redeveloped by AlburyCity to be called the Tim Fischer Centre. This would be a wonderful way to commemorate a great local person who contributed so much to the Albury and Australian communities. I found Lauriston Muirhead's assessment on the Adani mine ('Adani mine needs to go', February 10) was factually incorrect and his assertions predictable but ill-considered political rhetoric. The Barrier Reef is not "dying". There are plenty of qualified facts to support this. "Our country still burns with pollution thick in the air"?. We've just had serious but hardly unprecedented bushfires. Smoke is not "pollution". "Rescind all approvals for the Adani coal mine."? How simplistic to state we should be mining minerals such as lithium for the "new technology revolution". Has he really considered the massive mining needed for lithium etc and the environmental degradation it causes for a dubious benefit? "Transfer workers from the fossil fuel industry to the clean renewables industry"? What happens during the transition, tens of thousands of workers displaced around Australia for no discernable environmental benefit globally? Lobby Susan Ley's office to remove all approvals for any new coal mining? Sounds like he is just parroting Labo'rs misplaced Green agenda which was soundly rebuked at the last federal election. Informed voters need to be heeded by politicians and are no longer fooled by alarmist theories.
