Vicki Baudry, of Wagga, said "I'm not from Albury, so I really can't have an opinion".

However, she if such a move occurred she "would like it to be recognition of Tim as a person, not as a political figurehead" and a mark of his "helping wherever he could with anybody and everybody".

Mrs Baudry has discussed the idea, floated last week by Albury Labor councillor Darren Cameron, with Mr Fischer's widow Judy Brewer.

Ms Brewer declined to comment to The Border Mail.

Mr Fischer's political party the Nationals backs the idea, with Albury electorate council chairman John Chanter enthusiastic.

"It would be entirely fitting to see QEII Square renamed to honour Tim Fischer," Mr Chanter said.

"He set the standard for doing what was right, not what was popular, and for that he was respected by all sides of politics.

"The fact this proposal to rename QEII Square is being championed by passionate Border Labor figure in Darren Cameron reinforces this common held view.

"His office as Member for Farrer was just across from QEII Square, which was also the location for Tim's state funeral."

Mr Fischer's successor as member for Farrer, Liberal Party MP Sussan Ley is not sold on the proposal.

"Should QEII become Tim Fischer Square?" Ms Ley said.

"Perhaps there is somewhere else in the city even more relevant to Tim's unique legacy.

"If council wants to start a discussion with ratepayers on changing or keeping the name, then I think that is a healthy conversation to have."

Cr Cameron said the next step would be some form of consultation, although he is unsure on exactly what form that should take.

"This should not be a top down process, it should be from the people of Albury and we should be guided by their majority view," he said.

The Border Mail has editorialised in favour of the name change, declaring "Mr Fischer would be a more than worthy candidate to have his name on Albury's city square, rather than Queen Elizabeth".
