Superintendent Pat Westwood said lightning ignited the fire that resulted in the death of Samuel McPaul, and injured six other firefighters.
"The fire displayed some of the most extreme fire behaviour I've seen this year, it reportedly created fire tornadoes, ran for 85kms from Talmalmo/Jingellic to Tom Groggin Station burning through many towns including Corryong, most of that occurred at night, it is very rare behaviour," he said.
"There were significant saves made during the campaign fire thanks to the efforts of our brave fire fighters, in the NSW side alone there were 60 outbuildings, 47 houses saved with unfortunately 22 outbuildings and eight dwellings destroyed, some heavy stock losses reported but importantly no additional civilian loss of life."

Superintendent Westwood said it was now time to try and move forward, while remembering what was learnt from this terrible fire.
"Whilst the fire is now out, the long road of returning to 'normal' is just beginning for our community," he said.
"Our firefighters, international and interstate fire personnel and local community have really come together and given an enormous amount of effort to get through this horrible start to the year 2020, we just can't say thank you enough."
Fire restrictions still remain in place.
