Mr Elliott, originally from Perth, has been travelling Australia and more recently the Riverina, with four fully grown camels, a camel calf and a dog.

During the past week Mr Elliott has been making his was along the Olympic Highway, leading his peculiar convoy through the main streets of Cuclairn and Gerogery.

And while Mr Elliott might seem at home on the road with his camels, it's a world away from his former life.

"Not only had I had no experience with camels [before I started] I had no experience with animals at all apart from the family dog," he said.

"I knew I wanted to do some kind of big trip, a different kind of trip around Australia... and someone mentioned camels at a dinner one night, so I googled how to buy a camel and it evolved from there."

Mr Elliott said after working nine-to-five for years, trying to get ahead, he was sick of it.

"I was stuck in a competitive loop, no matter how well I did there was always someone with a nicer car and bigger home or someone earning more than me," he said.

"I just didn't see how it would ever end.

"So instead of upgrading my car I decided to give it away to charity.

"It felt like I'd broken the shackles, I was free and no longer in that kind of cycle - it was the straw that broke the camel's back really."

Mr Elliott is headed to Albury and said he plans to arrive to "parade" through Dean Street on Friday or Saturday, though making camels stick to a schedule can be difficult.

From Albury he will head to Melbourne, before he and the camels take a trip on the Spirit of Tasmania across Bass Strait. His journey started at Coonarr Beach, Queensland, and will end in Alice Springs, where he will rest during the heat of summer and decide whether to keep trekking.

Along the way Mr Elliott is raising money and awareness for Beard Season, a skin cancer charity, and hopes to inspire others to live a bit more adventurously.
