Former Socceroo and Melbourne Victory legend Archie Thompson will continue to play competitively this season, signing a one-year deal with Victorian State League outfit Essendon Royals.

The former Twin City Wanderers product played the last three seasons with Border NPL side Murray United, but following its withdrawal from senior competition earlier this year, he's opted to press on in Melbourne.
Thompson, 41, will reunite with former Victory teammates Michael Ferrante and Carl Recchia.

"I just thought if I wanted to finish my competitive career, then I'd want to do it with some mates and seeing I live right up the road as well, that helped too," Thompson said.
"It's great grassroots football, and I enjoyed that experience at Murray United as well. These are the grassroots clubs that breed future A-League players, European players and maybe even Socceroos."
The Royals take on Brimbank Stallions in round one of the State League 1 North-West season on March 21.
