Jules Boag's Model S Tesla was parked in the Wilson Street car park on Thursday when the sentry mode kicked in as two men approached the car and cameras filmed the deliberate damage.
The technology is part of the car's security system which kicks into gear when it detects movement close to the car and it switched to alarm mode when the man hit the car, sending a text to Mr Boag.
The man is seen walking up the car and hitting the driver's side mirror with a skateboard before smashing the windscreen and walking off.
Another man is also captured walking around the other side of the car at the time pointing to the other end of the car park before the two men leave together.
IN OTHER NEWS:
Mr Boag said the men obviously didn't know what car they were attacking.
"This is one of the great things about these cars that the cameras film everything that happens around it," he said.
"I have had cars damaged before and most of the time you never know what happened and when I arrived back at my car I didn't know what could have caused such damage to the windscreen.
"And then I looked at the footage and saw he did it with a skateboard.
"I guess they chose the wrong car."
This wasn't the only damage caused in the car park this week with Trent Geddes finding three tyres slashed on his Volkswagen Jetta.
Although the damage wasn't caught on camera, his dash-cam footage did capture a man loitering in front of and around his car in the middle of the day.
"I was a bit surprised to be honest, we park our cars there for work and have never had any issues," Mr Geddes said.
"I don't know the motive for doing this to someone's car and I know the tyre business which fixed my car had seen three other cases of tyres being slashed in the Wilson Street car park or the SS&A car park.
"Colleagues of mine are now quite scared to park there which makes it hard because there are limited car parks around that central CBD area."
For both men, the inconvenience of having their car out of action was the main issue and both footage was handed in to police in hope the men are caught.
