Magistrate Richard Funston drew attention to Dennis Michael Howard's absence in setting a date for sentence.
"It's a little unusual," Mr Funston told defence lawyer Graham Lamond in Albury Local Court this week.
IN OTHER NEWS:
But Mr Lamond said Howard, 41, was aware the plea was going to be entered on several charges despite him not being present, having entered a drug rehabilitation program in September. He went into custody in June.
Mr Lamond said Howard had taken part, by phone, in a case conference between the defence and the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
DPP representative Lisa Hanshaw withdrew several charges.
Howard will be sentenced on March 31.
