Heading into Monday's final round, Murray is tied for 15th on four-under par.
Major winner Justin Thomas leads on 15-under.
World number one Rory McIlroy and number three Jon Rahm are four shots further back.
Murray started with an even-par 71 and has followed that with successive two-under rounds.
To highlight the 22-year-old's stunning effort, he and Mexican Carlos Ortiz are the only players in the top 20 who sit outside the world's top 100.

Given the 17-hour time difference between Mexico City and Australia's eastern seaboard, Murray doesn't tee off until 5.18am.
