The Enzed hose salesman and harness racing administrator said he wanted to remain on council to oversee projects such as the development of Borella Road and the Nexus industrial estate.
"I'd like to think my experience and skills would benefit the new council with continuity and I think that does make a difference," Cr van de Ven said.
He conceded though opting to run again was not a certainty.
"At my advancing age you really do give it some decent thought," Cr van de Ven said.
"If I get elected I'll be 74 by the time the term finishes, those sort of things cross your mind."
"That was a comment to throw out a challenge to them and say single-issue politics don't work and you're attacking me for something I haven't done," he said.
Cr van de Ven would not rule out a tilt at the mayoralty if re-elected.
His 2015-16 stint split Kevin Mack's terms as mayor - 2013-15 and 2016 to now.
"I make no bones about it, I enjoyed my one year as mayor and would have liked another two or three years, but that's not my focus," he said.
