Discussions between AFL Riverina, the Hume league and North East Border Female Football League have been ongoing for several months with Jindera to be the girls' base.

The competition has already unearthed several AFLW players including Greater Western Sydney star Alyce Parker, St Kilda's Emma Mackie and Collingwood's Sophie Casey.

Jindera's Aimee Riley, who has been working closely with the governing bodies, said the league wanted to provide another pathway for its players.

"It's still pretty early but we are excited about it," Riley said.

"The league has identified we have an area where girls are coming through and can only play to a certain age (under 14).

"We think this would provide a fantastic opportunity for those girls to continue in the sport."

Officials are yet to decide on the league's nickname.

The North East Border Female Football League presently has open and youth grades with Lavington, Thurgoona, Alpine Lions, Murray Felines, Wodonga Raiders, Yarrawonga and Wangaratta Rovers fielding two sides each.

"We are working closely with the Hume league to establish a team based out of Jindera that will take advantage of the fantastic women's facilities currently being established at the ground," Riley said.

"We're incredibly excited to give girls the opportunity to strengthen our local competition and give girls pathways into AFLW.

"Our area is well known as being formidable in strength in talent through the men and already with the women and we are keen to build on that."

Riley said the league planned to run a training camp in the next couple of months.

"It would be like an expression of interest and we would take it from there once we know the numbers," she said.

Hume league president Brendan I'Anson welcomed the addition of girls football after seeing many youngsters stop playing after under-14s.

"I think it's a great initiative," I'Anson said.

"It's a big area and there is a lot of talent out there.

"We've already seen some of the girls from this region make it to AFLW and I'm sure there will be plenty more given these sort of opportunities.

"It's open to girls from outside the league as well so we'd love to hear from anyone interested in playing."
