Culcairn produced the upset of the Albury and District pennant season with an impressive 11-shot win away to ladder leaders North Albury on Saturday. The Lions dug in to claim two rinks and draw the other to regain the Allen "Salty" Ross Memorial Trophy. Ross, an integral member of both clubs, lost his battle with MND last year. The victory was set up by an inspired performance from Dave Trebley, who skipped his side to a 20-15 triumph over John Dawson. With North Albury in a position to snatch an unlikely victory, Trebley produced a stunning bowl on the penultimate end to cut North Albury's six shots back to one. The Hopper outfit had the chance to draw the rink on the final end when holding four shots, but Trebley was able to trail the jack to claim the win by five. Daryl Lawson saw off Andrew Hirst, 20-14, while David Moore and Stephen Broad played out a 22-all draw. Lavington moved into second spot with a comfortable 78-45 salute away to Howlong. Max Scanlan was a massive 36-14 winner against Ian Doolan, Bill Davison saw off Phil Slater, 23-11, while John Boyd's side delivered Howlong its first rink win of the season with a 20-19 result against Jason Thomas. Grade three ladder: North Albury 48.5, Lavington 47, Henty 42, Culcairn 21.5, Howlong 1. ALSO IN SPORT: North Albury secured a grand final berth in grade four with a thrilling one-shot win, 55-54, over Commercial at home. Commercial had already sewn two rinks up with Les Murphy toppling Phil Jones, 18-15, while Nev Aylmore came from behind to defeat Bernie Mahlo, 17-15. However, David Brown required a six-shot win against Grant Brazier to see the Hoppers home. With scores locked at 19-19 on 18 ends, his rink picked up a one and a three, leaving two to get on the last. Commerical held three shots before Brown drove with his first bowl and sat next to the jack in the ditch to make it two for the Hoppers. Brazier's first attempt at a draw finished inches outside the boundary peg and Brown piled on the pressure by drawing another close. The last bowl from Brazier came up short, seeing the Hoppers pick up the two shots required. Lavington will meet North Albury in the decider after picking up all three rinks in their 61-50 win at Holbrook. Grade four ladder: North Albury 48, Lavington 48, Commercial 25, Holbrook 19. Commercial locked in top spot in grade 5.1 with a hard-fought 55-52 win at home to North Albury, while Culcairn beat Howlong, 70-49. Walla and Henty are poised to reach the semi-finals in group two, defeating Rand (64-41) and Oaklands (62-45), respectively. Grade 5.1 ladder: Commercial 69.5, North Albury 46, Culcairn 20, Howlong 12. Grade 5.2 ladder: Walla 59, Henty 56, Oaklands 41.5, Rand 16.
