Culph lost the men's singles in a super tiebreak, 11-13, after taking the second 6-1 in Wodonga on Monday.
"In the second set I felt really good and once you get into the super tiebreak it's a shoot out, so first to 10 could have gone either way," Culph said.
"He (O'Brien) has had a great tournament and has been playing great tennis.
"It's good to see so many familiar faces, it's one of the best ones on the calendar."
After seeking treatment for a Baker's cyst on the back of his knee earlier this year, Culph said he looks likely to contest the Albury Easter tournament next month.
"It's starting to get back to where I need it to get to," he said.
