On Sunday, the Victorian Health Department confirmed there were no COVID-19 cases in the Border and North East region.
A spokesman called on residents to avoid rumours and rely on reputable sources of information.
Education department Mark Scott said the measures were precautionary and designed to reduce exposure.
"From Monday onwards, I expect school assemblies and substantial gatherings to be cancelled, along with all excursions," he said.
"The community expects schools to be as safe as possible. We are implementing these measures to provide peace of mind for students, parents and staff."
MORE CORONAVIRUS:
Mr Scott said the cancellations should extend to include all inter-school arts or sports events. The Victorian Education Department had not released a similar policy at the time of print.
The announcement comes as Victorian Government announced $60 million to encourage hospitals to undertake as many elective surgeries as possible, so hospital can better cope with coronavirus cases.
"We know when the COVID-19 pandemic reaches its peak our hospitals are going to be busier than ever," Health Minister Jenny Mikakos said. "So it makes sense to get as many patients as possible into elective surgery now while we can."
IN OTHER NEWS:
Ramsay Health, which operates Albury Wodonga Private, Murray Valley Private and The Border Cancer hospitals, announced their facilities were on standby to ease Albury Wodonga Health's surgical burden and ensure they had the capacity to cater for coronavirus patients.
Chief executive Sheryl Keir said "as Albury Wodonga Health readies itself for an influx of confirmed coronavirus cases" the Ramsay Health institutions would "help to lighten the region's public elective surgery lists to prevent a backlog."
