With coronavirus wiping out the home and away series until at least May 31, the idea was floated by a club official prior to the league's special meeting on Wednesday night.
In other developments, the league has abandoned this year's inter-league clash against Goulburn Valley at Shepparton and postponed its annual Hall of Fame function.

League general manager Sean Barrett believes a top-eight is worth looking into further as the league attempts to work its way through its most disrupted season since World War II in 1940.
"The thought was it could keep clubs engaged over a possible nine-round season if they lost their first two or three games," he said.

Playing the season into October is another option the Ovens and Murray is likely to investigate if the coronavirus situation eases.
The O and M was set to start with a match between Albury and Wodonga Raiders on March 28.
The Hume league will address the same issues next week.
