Stars of the Border Dance for Cancer has collected more than $47,800 so far for NSW Cancer Council, well above 10 times the $3000 target set for each celebrity.
The annual gala night, where the stars perform a dance routine learned in eight weeks, has been postponed owing to the COVID-19 public health risks, moving from May 1 to a date to be confirmed.
Community relations co-ordinator Brianna Carracher apologised for any inconvenience and thanked people for understanding.
"Knowing that many who attend our events are in a higher risk group, we're confident that this decision is in the best interests of everyone involved," she said.
Journalist Jodie Bruton, who is representing The Border Mail, said the participants accepted the situation.
"They understand this is the new normal and this is reality and we have to do what's the safest course of action," she said.
"When it's appropriate we'll all be back better than ever."
Bruton had been rehearsing a hip hop routine with her instructor Kim Blanza but it's been "a bit of a stretch".
"I've been doing an adult ballet class for a couple of years, but it's not, for me, a natural extension of that," she said.
"Hip hop is a whole other ball game, but I'm really enjoying it."

"To be able to put together a little mini-routine, he's just got a great sense of fun and is an amazing teacher," Bruton said.
The event added to an earlier movie night while Bruton, well-known for her food writing, plans to present a pop-up cafe in the future.
"I've done the Gold Class and the barre class, there had to be a food thing in there, right?" she said.
Another health condition is dominating attention just now, but the illness behind Stars of the Border is never forgotten.
Having lost Australian and Kiwi work colleagues to cancer, Bruton said The Border Mail had felt many losses too.
"Sometimes you don't even appreciate that you have a mentor, until you don't," Bruton said.
"Peter was always quick with positive feedback, a great story idea or an entertainment tidbit.
"While Netflix thinks it can give you a 98 per cent compatibility rating on your viewing, Peter's recommendations were always 100 per cent for me!"
