With the region before floored by the bushfires and now facing coronavirus, Nicholas said the community was "flat".

The competition won't start until at least May 31 and Nicholas, like many football officials, fears that date will be pushed further back with a lockdown anticipated.

"My personal feeling right now is we might as well forget about footy for this year," Nicholas said.

"I think we should walk away from it for a while.

"Everyone is pretty flat with the fires and now coronavirus.

"I've heard people say footy is in a heap of trouble up here if we didn't do something this year, but I'm not sure about that.

"There is no end date to anything at this stage which makes things very difficult.

"People might need time to take stock of everything that's happened and just get ready for next year."

If the season does get off the ground, a possible scenario could be the five Upper Murray league clubs playing each other once before a finals series.

Nicholas said the Upper Murray had been buoyed by the recent Footy for Fires fundraiser pre-season matches at Cudgewa.

"Clubs might just want to rally together and do an event like we did at Cudgewa the other week," he said.

"There has been a bit of talk of a double-header or two if we didn't run with a proper season.

"I guess we will look at all options when the time comes and take it from there."

Nicholas said nothing of this magnitude had hit the Upper Murray league before with Border-Walwa's decision to go into recess being followed by the bushfires and coronavirus.

The Ovens and Murray held a president and delegates meeting on Wednesday night to share information while the Hume league was set to meet on Thursday night.

The Tallangatta and District league will meet next week.
