But with the football season now thrown into chaos due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it looks unlikely the girls will make it back onto the field.
The start date of May 31 for football will bypass the girls' 10 round season, which commenced on March 1.
Barber was selected in the AFLW under-18 All Australian team last year after impressing in the forward line for Vic Country.
The 17-year-old had planned to set aside netball and basketball to focus on football and Year 12 this year, with her studies now taking place from home.
"It's hit me pretty hard," Barber said.
"Everyone else is going through the same thing, so I can't say I'm the unlucky one because I'm sure there's more people that are in a worse position than me.
It is what it is and there's not much I can do about it, we'll just see what happens.

"I'm just trying to get into a routine, I think that's the best thing for me to do.
"It is what it is and there's not much I can do about it, we'll just see what happens."
Bushrangers' coach Mario de Santa-ana admitted there were questions surrounding how the draft would look this year given the interruptions.
"Having made All-Australian last year, she (Barber) was obviously marked as potentially going as a top pick in this year's draft," de Santa-ana said.
"I don't think the season finishing early would damage her chances of that occurring, but how the draft may look is the question."
"We've just been keeping the girls up to date with any updates from the AFL.
"Our main focus at the moment is the wellbeing of the girls."
Griffith's Abby Favell is also in the mix after a strong 2019 season.
