Ken Roberts coached Lavington from 1980-84 and led the club to the flag in 1983 after being runner-up the previous year.
He was recruited from Essendon and worked at the former Lavington Sports Club which was instrumental in originally developing the venue which has hosted a World Cup cricket match, National Rugby League and A-League soccer matches for premiership points and a lucrative athletics carnival which attracted competitors from interstate and overseas.

Mr Roberts said Lavington not only ran the risk of losing its identity, but the move would also create an unnecessary and confusing double up if Albury was included in a new name.
"I'm strongly opposed to the idea," he said.
"It can't have Albury in the name because Albury is already playing at the Albury Sportsground.
"You don't have two MCGs in Melbourne do you?
"All the people who came before me and after me put a lot of work and effort into that club to have its own identity in that suburb of Albury.
"To lose that would be grossly unfair."
Mr Roberts acknowledged the council had played a major part in keeping the venue when the former licensed club shut, but a name change was an unnecessary over-reach.
