IGA supermarket owner Bob Mathews has had the barriers installed at checkouts at his East Albury store in recent days, with plans to erect them at his Jindera and Springdale Heights outlets today.
"The customers get concerned about whether our staff have coronavirus and our staff are worried about customers having coronavirus," Mr Mathews said.
"Putting barriers between the two of them will mean staff feel more comfortable and customers feel more comfortable."
North Albury firm Murray River Maintenance is erecting the screens in Mr Mathews' stores.
But it is not the only company on the Border doing such work, Signarama Albury-Wodonga has put its screens up at the Howlong IGA and has orders from two pharmacies.
IN OTHER NEWS:
Owner Andrew Reid said his wife Jody is the manager at the Albury-Wodonga Paediatric Group and first suggested the barriers to him and he had since installed some at that practice.
Up to $50,000 worth of sign orders have been postponed or cancelled because of the virus.
"Being a small business we had to find a niche market and fortunately this might keep us going for another two weeks," Mr Reid said.
"I've got five full-time staff I'm trying to keep up."
Meanwhile, Mr Mathews said he had also opted to have shelves restacked at night rather than during the day to keep staff and shoppers apart.
He said email orders for groceries from the East Albury had gone from an average of 20 each week to 150 this week as consumers opt not to leave their homes.
However, based on relatively low shopper numbers and the pattern of their trolley movements he rejected a suggestion that he introduce one-way aisles to avoid customers being in close proximity.
"At this stage we don't see that as an issue," Mr Mathews said.
"If we found we had too many shoppers we would look at them coming in on a one-in, one-out basis (as has occurred in Italy)."
