A driver who tried to flee after an alleged hit-and-run in a residential street in Wangaratta was arrested before he could get too far.

The 30-year-old man was driving south on Graham Avenue at about 12.30pm on Friday when he lost control.
Police will allege he was speeding, and some residents told The Border Mail they estimated the white Ford sedan was travelling as fast as 100km/h in a 50km/h zone.
Senior Constable Steve Anders said the skid marks on the road showed where the driver lost control, hit the gutter on the left, then spun around to the right.
The Ford crashed into the front of a Mitsubishi ASX parked in a driveway.

The driver allegedly ran away on foot south down Graham Avenue, but was quickly caught by police on nearby Vincent Road.
"He'll be summonsed for a number of driving offences," Senior Constable Anders said.
"It was lucky the car was there or else he would have hit the fence, or if there were bikes - there's a lot of people out exercising."
