Mitch Beer was as happy as a trainer could be without winning after Sky Call's brave effort in the Country Championships final at Randwick on Saturday.

With Glen Boss on board, the mare worked its way into a strong position at the 200, before fading late to finish ninth behind winner Gracie Bell on the heavy track.
"'Bossy' said, 'if it doesn't rain, she just about wins', which was hard to swallow because you do everything you can. She'd never seen a soft track before, let alone a heavy one," Beer said.

"He was of the opinion that probably a furlong out he felt like he was the winner, but when he let her head go, she didn't appreciate the heavy going at all.
"To only be beaten by two lengths in a such a good race is a credit to her."
Sky Call started the preparation with a rating of 57 and will head to the paddock at 77 after earning more than $125,000 in her past 10 starts.
Donna Scott's Bennelong Dancer finished 13th in its third run in the final.
