Wodonga Inspector Paul Hargreaves said tools were being targeted in a range of areas across the city.

"It's probably a result of a number of vehicles being parked outside residences and not being secured properly," he said.

"There are more people at home and not out at work.

"Essentially what we're asking people to do is secure their items.

"If you leave tools in open vehicles you are creating an opportunity for a very dishonest person."

Inspector Hargreaves said offenders could sell stolen tools "very, very quickly".

"We will enhance our patrols around this type of activity," he said.

"I would urge anyone offered tools and trade applications to contact us immediately.

"Do not become involved."

He said people who bought stolen items could themselves be charged.

"Don't become involved by accepting a cheap deal," he said.

"We'd urge them to contact us."

Those targeting vehicles for property can quickly check dozens of vehicles in an area to see if they are unlocked.
